Early Victorian hairstyles...
We were introduced to two early Victorian hairstyles in this seminar, finger curls and loose curls featured near the fringe.
I practised the loose curls on a dolls head.
- I first created barrel curls around the front of the head.
- These were created using a curling tong; section the hair using a comb so each section is the same size.
- Select a strand/piece of hair, clip the hair on to the curler at the end of the strand then roll down to the root of the head.
- Leave it on for a couple of seconds then gently remove the curlers ensuring the curls is still in it created barrel shape.
- Secure the curl by clipping it with sectioning clips or grips.
My attempt of the barrel curls.
Example of finger waves...
Creating finger waves...
Products used:
Water spray
Pintail comb
Sectioning clips
Hairdryer
Hairbrush
Hairspray
Hair polish (if needed.)
- Perform your usual consultation on your model.
- Begin by sectioning the hair into two parts, front and back then section the front into two different sections.
- Spray some water onto the front section of hair, the wet texture will help to create shape. (If the hair is dry apply a hair polish to create shine.)
- Take the first section of hair and comb through away from the models face. Make sure you get rid of any fly aways.
- Position your middle finger parallel to the hair and press downwards.
- Brush the model's hair towards the front making sure the middle finger stays in place.
- Position your finger in line with your forefinger and pinch the two together. Use the pintails comb to help raise the hair in between the finger and clip.
- This technique forms the wave. Secure it using a sectioning clips.
- Once the whole section is in a wet styled wave place a hair net over it. Either let it air dry naturally or use heat. (A faster result if you're in a hurry.)
- Once the hair is dry gently/lightly brush through with preferably a wide toothed brush to create a natural effect. Add hairspray to hold the style.
Health and safety:
- Use products that are suitable for sensitive skin and ask about allergies.
- Make sure that none of the products go near the models eyes and avoid comb scratches.
- Keep the water away from any electrical.
- Keep area tidy and clean.
- Always check the temperature of the hairdryer before use.
